Shameful

We always keep sharp cheddar, parrano, and chevre in our house and grilled cheese sandwiches are in regular rotation around here. But every few years, I get the worst craving for Kraft singles, which I'm pretty sure can't even be called cheese, legally. It's humiliating.

{grilled cheese}

I have no idea where this comes from. I didn't even grow up with it, so the only time I ever had it was at other people's houses. It's something about the plastic-y way that it melts that gets me. Luckily, the cravings usually only last a couple weeks. Fingers crossed.

My most perfect grilled cheese is made in our cast iron skillet, with the heat on low, butter on the bread and a heavy glass lid on top that helps melt the cheese quickly and pushes the bread firmly against the pan.

  2. I hope you aren't alone in that craving, I've been known to have it too. I also like Kraft Mac and Cheese with lots of black pepper on occasion...

  3. Rachel,

    I love all sorts of cheeses, but I also have a certain fascination with Kraft American. I think it's the perfect cheese for burgers. It must be something about the way it melts :)

  6. I agree with Cara: I have been known to keep a couple boxes of Kraft Mac and Cheese around the house, just in case there's a day when all the roommates are away and I need a blast from the past :P No shame in that.

    When I was a kid, I used to eat Kraft singles dipped in ketchup. Talk about nutritious!

  11. I prefer American cheese in my grilled cheese. I know it's wrong, but it melts better, doesn't get oily (like a cheddar or swiss does), and is just heaven between bread.

    I try to buy the stuff they slice behind the deli counter (like Land O'Lakes White American), because at it's not an individually processed sheet of cheese packed in plastic.

    I also agree with Color Me Yellow... gc + tomatoes = heaven :)

  15. I do love a grilled cheese sandwich, but I've never liked Kraft Singles. I might even occasionally refer to it as fake plastic cheese. (I don't do Velveeta - voluntarily, anyway - either.) I know how cravings go, though, and sometimes the best thing to do is just give in. Enjoy your sandwiches!

  17. Hiii I just discovered your blog, and I cannot stop reading it!!! I am officially obsessed :)

    I love the fact that you had a Kraft cheese craving because this happens to me all the time and let me tell ya, it's not very cool for a French person to admit that they like cheese that pretty much looks like a piece of plastic!

    I am totally stealing your grilled cheese making ways though - never covered it up but if it looks as good as yours, I'm in!

  19. Its like dirty cheeseburger cravings. I think the cheese is the only reason I like them (I get them without the meat - wierd I know).

    I think a few shameful cravings are good. they keep you grounded!
